Grammy Awards: Tems Wins Best African Music Performance Category

News Desk

Tems has clinched her second Grammy award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

The singer-songwriter won the Best African Music Performance category for her song ‘Love Me JeJe’, marking a significant milestone as her first solo Grammy win.

The 2025 Grammy Awards saw a strong Nigerian presence in the Best African Music Performance category, with Tems emerging victorious over other top contenders.

Her track Love Me JeJe triumphed over: Chris Brown’s Sensational featuring Davido & Lojay, Asake’s MMS featuring Wizkid, Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, Burna Boy’s Higher.

This marks the second instalment of the category, which was first introduced at the 2024 Grammys. South African singer Tyla won the inaugural award for her hit single Water.

Tems’ victory in the Best African Music Performance category is historic, making her the first Nigerian artist to win in the category as a solo act.

Her award-winning track, Love Me JeJe, serves as the second single from her critically acclaimed 2024 debut album Born in the Wild.

The album itself was nominated for Best Global Music Album, a highly competitive category.

However, the award ultimately went to Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Alkebulan II, beating out nominees such as Ciro Hurtado’s Paisajes, Rema’s HEIS, Antonio Rey’s Historias De Un Flamenco, Tems’ Born in the Wild

Despite missing out on the Best Global Music Album award, Tems’ Grammy victory underscores her growing dominance in the international music scene. With an impressive eight career Grammy nominations and two wins, she continues to break barriers and elevate African music to greater heights.
