Musa Na Allah, Sokoto
Sokoto State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Sokoto Chapter, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, appeals to Governor Ahmed Aliyu to address pressing worker needs.
Comrade Jungle urged the Governor to make affordable housing a top priority for civil servants, many of whom face daily struggles securing decent accommodation despite their dedication to public service.
“Housing is a basic right,” Jungle emphasized. “Providing homes for workers would be a lasting legacy of this administration.”
In addition to housing, the NLC leader called for a motorcycle loan scheme to assist workers—particularly lower-income staff in remote areas—who face daily transportation challenges.
“Such a loan program would significantly ease the burdens of commuting, especially for junior staff who often travel long distances to work,” Jungle said.
He applauded the state government’s prompt implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, calling it a commendable step that reflects the administration’s responsiveness to workers’ needs.
Jungle further encouraged continued collaboration and open dialogue between the labour unions and the state government to ensure industrial harmony and sustained worker satisfaction.
In his own address, Governor Ahmed Aliyu praised the contributions of civil servants across all sectors, including ministries, departments, agencies, and local governments.
The Governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to revamping the civil service and building a motivated and respected workforce through timely salary payments and policy reforms.
“Today, salaries are paid consistently between the 19th and 20th of each month—a major improvement from the past,” Governor Aliyu noted.
The Governor confirmed the full implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage for all workers, including local government and primary school staff, making Sokoto the first state to do so.
He also mentioned welfare packages such as the N30,000 Goron Sallah bonus and the phased payment of a N15 billion gratuity backlog, including a monthly N500 million allocation for retirees.
Governor Aliyu announced that civil servants would benefit from 1,500 housing units currently under construction as part of the administration’s broader housing initiative.
Additional support programs like the “Shagon Sauki na Ahmadun Alu” initiative, which provides essential commodities at subsidized rates, were introduced to further ease the financial burden on workers.
He urged workers to match the government’s efforts with dedication, punctuality, and a strong sense of duty, reinforcing his administration’s Smart Agenda for a prosperous Sokoto.
