Woman Arrested One Year After for Stealing 2-day-old Baby

On 17th March 2024, one Mallam Sani reported a case of child stealing to the Police in the Tambuwal Local Government Area, as confirmed by the Sokoto State Police Command.

The man said his 2-day-old baby was abducted by one Hamida Mustapha of Fakon Edi Area in Tambuwal town.

According to a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Sokoto by the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Rufae Abubakar, a woman came to the house of Malam Sani in Tambuwal town and claimed to be his Sister’s friend.

“After she met his wife, she brought out some clothes for her to give the new baby.

“She told the mother of the baby that she wanted to show the new baby to her boyfriend, who was outside the house, after which she ran away with the 2-day-old baby.”

The statement disclosed that one year after the incident, on the 12th of March 2025, the suspect, Hamida, had a misunderstanding with her husband after which she told him that he was not the biological father of the child and based speculations in the community.

“The matter was reported to the Police station in Tambuwal, and the suspect, Hamida Almustapha was invited for interrogations.   

The suspect, as mentioned in the statement upon interrogations, revealed that she took the baby to her grandmother, whom she lied to, that she had delivered the baby herself after knowing fully that she is pregnant. The grandmother denied knowledge of the delivery, saying she only saw her with the 2-day-old baby.

After interrogation, Hamida confessed to the offence and also lied to her husband and his relations of her false delivery after knowing fully she abducted the baby from One Zainab Sani two days after delivery.

The baby was reunited with his parents while Hamida was charged to court, as stated in the statement

CP Musa reiterated the efforts of the state police Command to rid the State of all forms of crimes and criminalities while urging the public to continue to support the Police with useful pieces of information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of Criminals and their cohorts.

He charged Parents to be very careful and extra vigilant on the whereabouts and movement of their wards.
