TETFund Center of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto has successfully conducted a kidney transplant through a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach.
The Kidney transplantation was successfully carried out on Sunday with support from the University of Mansoura and the University of Alberta in Canada.
Prof. Samaila Mungadi, the Director of the center at the Transplant inaugural program Tuesday explained that the procedure involves several key stages, typically carried out with the collaboration of various specialists, including nephrologists, surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and transplant coordinators.
Professor Mungadi further provided an overview of how kidney transplants are conducted through a projector and explained that patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney failure are first evaluated by nephrologists through screening and testing.
“Extensive tests are performed to assess kidney function, overall health, and compatibility for the transplant. This includes blood tests, imaging (such as ultrasound), and tissue matching (HLA typing).
“Patients also undergo psychological and social assessments to ensure they are emotionally and socially prepared for the transplant.
“Regarding the donor, compatibility tests are carried out between the donor and the recipient.”
