Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has praised President Bola Tinubu for the way he honoured late former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it surpasses any gesture Buhari made toward others while in office.
Sani highlighted that Tinubu declared a public holiday, personally attended Buhari’s burial, met with his family, held a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in his honour, and renamed a federal university after him — all unprecedented actions for a sitting president toward a predecessor.
“The President physically attended the burial of Buhari, met with his family, declared a public holiday, held a FEC meeting in his honor, and renamed a university to immortalise him — something even the late President never did to others,” Sani posted on X.
His remarks come amid criticism from opposition groups, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing Tinubu’s administration of politicising Buhari’s death to boost its image.
In response, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, dismissed the ADC’s comments as “opportunistic” and “dishonest,” accusing them of exploiting the situation themselves.
“It is ironic that those accusing the President of politicising Buhari’s death are the ones dancing on his grave for attention,” Dare stated. “President Tinubu is not seeking cheap popularity. His growing list of achievements speaks louder than the noisy irrelevance of groups like the ADC.”
He also emphasized that Buhari was given a state burial befitting his status, attended by dignitaries from around the world and closely followed by millions of Nigerians.
The debate continues to stir political discussion over the legacy of Buhari and Tinubu’s handling of national unity and respect for past leaders.
