The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has cautioned officers against harassing or extorting motorists as the nationwide enforcement of tinted glass permits takes effect on October 2.
Speaking at the command headquarters in Ikeja after addressing officers, Jimoh said the directive followed instructions from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at a recent strategic conference in Abuja.
He stressed that while enforcement must be carried out, officers must respect citizens’ rights and avoid misconduct. “Enforcement should not be used as a means of extortion against members of the public. Anyone caught will face disciplinary action as provided by the Police Act,” he warned.
The commissioner reminded Nigerians that portals for permit applications had been open for months and urged them not to pay bribes for processing. He encouraged residents to report any unprofessional behaviour or demands for money by police personnel.
Jimoh assured Lagosians that officers would conduct themselves responsibly during the exercise but emphasised that accountability from the public was equally vital.
