The Taraba Renaissance Group (TRG) has strongly criticized Amnesty International’s latest report on inter-religious relations in Northern Nigeria, accusing the global rights organization of spreading misinformation and exacerbating sectarian tensions.
In a statement issued on Monday, TRG Chairperson Bridget Grace Adamu described the report as “a misleading and dangerous fabrication,” arguing it distorts the reality of Christian-Muslim relations in states like Taraba, Kaduna, Benue, and Plateau.
According to TRG, the report exaggerates conflicts and falsely portrays Northern Nigeria as perpetually divided along religious lines.
“We categorically reject Amnesty International’s report which seeks to promote a false narrative of religious conflict in Northern Nigeria,” the group said.
“It is not only misleading but also a shameful distortion aimed at inflaming already fragile communities.”
The group questioned the credibility of Amnesty’s findings, accusing the organization of bias and a pattern of publishing unbalanced reports.
“Amnesty has a track record of producing reports that are neither accurate nor impartial.
The data in this latest report appears exaggerated and seems to serve a specific agenda designed to stir up religious tensions,” the statement read.
TRG warned that such narratives threaten the delicate peace in many Northern communities and could reverse ongoing efforts to foster trust and cooperation.
“Portraying the region as locked in endless religious conflict undermines peace-building and sows seeds of mistrust.
It is dangerous and irresponsible,” the group added.
The statement also alleged that the report aligns with a broader agenda to destabilize Northern Nigeria, claiming it is supported by local political actors who benefit from division.
“This report fits into a long-standing international destabilization strategy, aided by local collaborators—some of whom are disgruntled politicians exploiting division for personal gain,” TRG claimed.
The group further warned that fueling ethnic and religious tensions could have far-reaching economic and political consequences.
“By inflaming tensions, these narratives aim to weaken Northern Nigeria’s capacity to thrive and compete with other regions.
This is a calculated effort to cripple the region’s development,” the group said.
TRG called on Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and embrace unity, urging citizens to question the authenticity of reports that deepen societal fault lines.
“We urge peace-loving Nigerians to see through this narrative.
“We must stand together against attempts to divide us and focus on building an inclusive and united region.”
The group also called on the federal government to address what it described as harmful misinformation from international organizations.
“We call on the Nigerian government to take firm action against the spread of misleading reports that threaten national cohesion,” TRG stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and development, the group concluded: “The Taraba Renaissance Group remains dedicated to promoting unity and progress. We reject any external efforts to destabilize our communities and will continue to work for a peaceful and prosperous Northern Nigeria.”
