The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment in the appeal challenging the outcome of the Edo State governorship election that produced Senator Monday Obekpolo as governor.
The judgment was reserved after parties presented arguments for and against the appeal filed by Mr. Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contesting Obekpolo’s victory.
Justice Garba Lawal, who presided over the case, announced that the date for the final judgment would be communicated in due course.
Represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ken Mosia, Ighodalo urged the court to nullify Obekpolo’s election and declare him the rightful winner, claiming he secured the majority of lawful votes.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through its counsel Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the appeal in its entirety. Agabi argued that Ighodalo and the PDP had discredited the election as illegal due to alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, yet still asked to be declared winners.
INEC maintained that such contradictory positions lacked merit and urged the court to strike out the appeal.
