The Sokoto Sultanate Council has dismissed as misleading a viral video circulating on social media alleging a fresh protest at the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto over prevailing economic hardship in the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the Sultanate Council, Aminu Haliru Gidadawa, clarified that the footage being widely circulated was an old video recorded in 2024 during nationwide protests sparked by the rising cost of food items and worsening economic conditions.
The Council described efforts to portray the footage as a recent development as false and deceptive, warning that the circulation of outdated content out of context could generate unnecessary tension and misinform the public.
“The video being circulated is not recent. It is an old footage from 2024 during demonstrations linked to the high cost of food items and economic hardship across the country,” the statement said.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals are deliberately recirculating the video with a false narrative intended to mislead the public.”
The Sultanate Council reiterated that the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has consistently shown concern over the plight of Nigerians and continued to advocate measures aimed at easing the hardship faced.
