Sokoto State Government on Thursday announced the immediate suspension of the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SSPHCDA), Dr. Larai Aliyu Tambuwal.

The decision, conveyed in a letter dated 2 October 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Ibrahim Haliru Dingyadi, on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, stated that Governor Ahmed Aliyu approved the suspension and directed Dr. Bilyaminu Sifawa to take over as Acting Executive Secretary without delay.

Although no official reason was provided, the suspension is widely viewed as part of an ongoing shake-up in Sokoto’s health sector.

The SSPHCDA, which oversees primary healthcare delivery across the state, plays a crucial role in maternal and child health programs, routine immunization, and the fight against preventable diseases.

Health experts say the leadership change could have significant implications for service delivery and have urged the new leadership to focus on accountability, efficiency, and continuity of reforms.

As Dr. Sifawa assumes office, stakeholders and development partners will be closely watching how the agency navigates the transition and whether the shake-up translates into meaningful improvements in Sokoto’s healthcare system.
