To tighten fiscal discipline and realign state resources with pressing priorities, the Sokoto State Executive Council has approved a second amendment to the 2025 budget.

The landmark decision was reached on Tuesday during the council’s 10th meeting, held inside the Council Chamber of Government House, Sokoto.

It underscores the administration’s determination to prevent implementation setbacks and guarantee maximum impact from every naira spent.

Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Zayyana, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, disclosed that the amendment process was undertaken after wide consultations with key stakeholders.

He explained that the review became necessary to reposition state finances in line with new realities and emerging needs.

According to him, the exercise was not about expanding the overall size of the budget but about restructuring allocations for efficiency.

“We are moving funds from dormant and unutilized codes to sectors where they will make a real difference. This way, no resources are wasted,” he said.

The Commissioner clarified that the total size of the 2025 budget remains intact at ₦526,882,142,184.39, reflecting the government’s commitment to fiscal prudence and efficiency in governance.

He further revealed that the total amount affected by the amendment is ₦38,817,279,500, which has now been redirected to critical sectors that have direct bearing on the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.

Dr. Zayyana stressed that the decision highlights government’s sensitivity to the shifting demands of the people, noting that the administration is determined to confront emerging challenges without derailing its financial plan for the year.

Observers say the amendment is a bold attempt to fix loopholes that could have slowed down project delivery.

It represents a proactive strategy to ensure that every line of expenditure in the 2025 budget delivers measurable results.

During deliberations, council members reiterated their unwavering support for reforms that guarantee value for money.

They emphasized that prudent management of public resources will continue to define the government’s approach to governance.

The realigned funds, according to officials, will inject fresh momentum into strategic projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security sectors regarded as indispensable in stabilizing the economy and improving living standards.

By approving this second amendment, the Sokoto State Government has demonstrated its readiness to make difficult but necessary decisions to protect the public interest and secure sustainable development.

Insiders maintain that the move is not merely a budgetary adjustment on paper but a strategic repositioning of state finances to ensure that no project of public importance is neglected in 2025.

With this amendment, the Sokoto government has sent a powerful signal that accountability, efficiency, and service delivery will remain the guiding principles of its financial management.
