The State Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano State, Hussaini Isa Mairiga, has resigned from his position and withdrawn his membership from the party, expressing deep disappointment over what he described as the degeneration of Nigeria’s democratic system.

In a statement obtained by Stallion Times on Monday, Mairiga said his resignation took immediate effect, adding that he could no longer remain part of a political structure that had abandoned integrity and democratic values.

He criticized the current political climate in the country, alleging that democracy is being manipulated for “personal enrichment and political appointments” rather than serving the interests of the people.

“The current state of Nigerian democracy has been distorted to serve as a conduit for personal gain rather than development. The ruling parties create factions within opposition parties just to weaken them,” he said.

Mairiga lamented what he called a leadership crisis within the SDP, noting that internal rivalry and conflicting claims of party leadership have crippled the party’s ability to function as a credible alternative.

“The SDP is battling severe leadership disputes. This internal conflict has damaged the party’s credibility and effectiveness,” he added.

He also condemned the growing trend of politicians treating political parties as “personal property,” decamping at will without consequences and disregarding party loyalty.

“Politicians move in and out of parties like a marketplace. There is no respect for ideology or loyalty. This attitude is damaging our democracy,” he stated.

Mairiga said he has chosen to “step back from partisan politics” until meaningful reforms restore democratic principles in the country.

He expressed hope that the SDP would eventually return to its founding ideals and contribute meaningfully to national development.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve and I hope to contribute to the growth of our country in a more meaningful way in the future,” he concluded.

Mairiga did not indicate whether he plans to join another political party.
