Jigawa State Police Command has urged journalists to support its renewed strategy to tackle crime and drug abuse across the state.
Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, appealed on Friday when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Dutse, the state capital.
He described the media as a vital partner in promoting security consciousness and enlightening citizens on their roles in maintaining peace and stability.
“Beyond reporting police activities, the media helps build public confidence in security institutions and encourages citizens to share vital information with the police,” Muhammad stated.
The newly posted commissioner emphasized that his approach would focus on strengthening collaboration with communities by fostering a sense of belonging in all matters affecting their safety and wellbeing.
“This time around, our relationship with the community will go beyond security enforcement. We want to build trust, confidence, and mutual understanding so that everyone plays their part in sustaining peace and stability,” he said.
Muhammad outlined some of the command’s measures, including proactive policing to instill public trust, diligent investigation and prosecution for fair and timely justice, and community policing as a foundation for effective collaboration.
Responding, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Muhammad Zangina Kura, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the long-standing cordial relationship between journalists and the command.
He assured the CP of the chapel’s readiness to partner with the police in implementing the new strategy, noting that security is a collective responsibility.
“While we report police efforts, we also enlighten the public on their expected roles and sometimes draw the attention of security agencies to emerging issues to help avert crime or breakdown of law and order,” Zangina said.
He pledged the chapel’s support in advancing the command’s strategy in line with the broader objectives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to promote inclusiveness in combating crime and strengthening peace across Nigeria.
