The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters in Kano, has confirmed the receipt of a petition against an online broadcaster, Ibrahim Ishaq, popularly known as Dan Uwa Rano Radio, over alleged defamation of character.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone One, Ahmed Garba, has reportedly ordered that the journalist be invited for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into the allegations.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Bashir Muhammad, the police will carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is served.
He said that if the broadcaster is found culpable, he will be charged to court.
AIG Garba also cautioned journalists and media practitioners to exercise professionalism and fairness in their reports.
He advised them to verify information and seek clarification from the Zonal Public Relations Office when necessary, instead of resorting to misinformation or unverified claims.
AIG Garba further appealed to the public and media stakeholders to allow due legal process to prevail and refrain from actions that could obstruct the investigation or prejudice the case.
“The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens,” the statement added. “The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.”
Zone One Headquarters in Kano oversees police operations in Kano and Jigawa States.
The petition against Dan Uwa Rano Radio comes amid growing concerns over the spread of unverified online content and increasing cases of cyber defamation in Nigeria.
