The Kano State Police Command has refuted claims that a journalist, Abdulaziz Aliyu, was detained at the Court Road Area Command, Gyadi-Gyadi, over a publication.
A statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, clarified that Aliyu was only invited following a written complaint lodged against him.
According to the statement, he was released on bail after his appearance and is expected to return today (Wednesday) to assist in ongoing investigations.
The police described the detention claim, made in an online statement by one Yakubu Salisu, as misleading and an attempt to tarnish the image of the Command.
“Checks with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, also revealed that neither Aliyu nor Salisu is a registered member of the union,” the statement added.
The Command assured residents that it respects press freedom and the constitutional right to free expression, but warned against spreading false information capable of straining police-media relations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, pledged that investigations into the complaint against Aliyu would be handled with transparency and professionalism.
The Command further urged the public to verify information before sharing and to continue cooperating with the police in safeguarding lives and property across the state.
