The ongoing turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated, as rival factions within the National Working Committee (NWC) initiated suspensions against key party officials.
The faction aligned with Acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum, took the first step by suspending National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN.
A committee, chaired by Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, was set up to investigate the allegations raised against these officers, as confirmed by Chinwe Nnorom, National Director of Publicity, in a statement released Thursday night.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arising from its 593rd meeting, has directed the National Publicity Secretary (NPS), Hon Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser (NLA), Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, to step aside,” she said. “Their deputies will assume office in an acting capacity pending the outcome of the investigation.”
In response, a rival faction retaliated by suspending Damagum and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Ologunagba’s statement on behalf of this faction cited “anti-party activity” in relation to a letter Damagum and Anyanwu sent to the Court of Appeal in a case involving former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Both Damagum and Anyanwu have been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.
This development follows calls from PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, for unity within the party during this critical period.
