The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a major rescue operation after a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized on Sunday morning in Sokoto State.

According to a statement by the agency, the ill-fated boat was en route to Goronyo Market when the accident occurred. So far, about 10 passengers have been rescued, while more than 40 remain missing.

NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said the agency activated its emergency response immediately after receiving reports of the mishap.

The NEMA Sokoto Operations Office (SOO) has since deployed its response team to join local authorities and other emergency responders in the ongoing search and rescue mission.
