To the Esteemed Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
As a human rights activist and Country Director of the IHRC-RFT Nigeria Chapter, I write to you regarding the rising fuel prices and the significant impact this has on the daily lives and security of Nigerians.
The ongoing increase in fuel costs is not only triggering widespread inflation, affecting food, transportation, and essential goods but also escalating insecurity across the country.
Despite progress in local refining, such as the recent fuel distribution efforts of the Dangote Refinery, Nigerians are experiencing relentless price hikes that deepen economic hardship and fuel insecurity.
Persistent inflation, combined with elevated living costs, creates conditions that jeopardize the rights and safety of many Nigerians. This concerning situation calls for immediate government intervention.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), to which Nigeria is a signatory, emphasizes the protection of economic and social rights, including security and dignity for all citizens. In light of these principles, we strongly urge the government to address this critical situation through the following actions:
1. Mitigate Economic Hardship to Prevent Rising Insecurity
Article 3 of the UDHR states, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” Economic hardship arising from high fuel prices intensifies insecurity, as financial instability often contributes to social unrest, criminal activity, and violence. In the face of elevated living costs, some individuals turn to crime as a means of survival.
Reducing fuel prices and stabilizing the economy are crucial steps in addressing the root causes of this insecurity and upholding citizens’ right to security.
2. Protect Citizens’ Right to Affordable Living Standards
Article 25 of the UDHR affirms, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family.” When fuel prices remain unchecked, they increase the cost of essential goods, transportation, and services, disproportionately affecting low-income Nigerians.
By addressing fuel costs, the government would alleviate economic pressures that erode citizens’ standard of living, ultimately reducing the conditions that often lead to social instability.
3. Implement Transparent and Fair Pricing Policies to Promote Trust and Stability
The right to transparent governance is linked to Article 19 of the UDHR, which states that everyone has the right to “seek, receive, and impart information.” Transparent and fair pricing mechanisms for fuel would foster trust among citizens, reduce social tension, and assure the public that their welfare is a priority.
Without transparency, artificial inflation perceptions grow, leading to frustration and, at times, protests or public dissent. Fair fuel pricing would restore confidence and contribute to a more stable social environment.
4. Strengthen Economic Stability to Reduce Crime Rates
Article 22 of the UDHR supports the right to social protection, emphasizing the need for states to secure the economic welfare of all citizens. Economic instability, fueled by artificial inflation, leaves vulnerable populations without the means to support their families.
A stable economy, supported by fair fuel pricing, would reduce incentives for illegal activities, contributing to the safety and security of Nigerian communities.
5. Promote Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Alternatives to Mitigate Price Volatility
By transitioning to renewable energy, Nigeria can lessen its dependency on oil, reducing vulnerability to price hikes that disrupt citizens’ lives and, indirectly, their security. This action would be aligned with Article 28 of the UDHR, which calls for social and international order that upholds individual rights and freedoms.
Infrastructure improvements, including transport logistics and investment in renewable energy sources, would also support economic stability, reducing inflationary pressure and associated social risks.
6. Implement Economic Stabilization Policies to Control Inflation and Security Risks
The continuous devaluation of the naira contributes to fuel price inflation, intensifying poverty and desperation. In such conditions, public safety is compromised as people struggle to cope with increasing costs.
We call on the government to pursue currency stabilization measures and inflation control, reducing both economic hardship and the security risks that arise from widespread poverty and lack of opportunity.
7. Provide Social Support and Protection for Vulnerable Groups
Economic hardship disproportionately affects marginalized communities, making them more susceptible to criminal influences as a means of survival. Article 22 of the UDHR affirms that individuals have the right to social security and protection, especially in times of economic hardship.
To address this, the government should consider targeted subsidies and social support for public transportation and essential goods, easing the impact on those most vulnerable to the current cost of living crisis.
Conclusion
The ongoing increase in fuel prices is creating a cycle of economic instability, inflation, and insecurity. We urge the government to take decisive steps to reduce fuel costs, stabilize the economy, and address the economic challenges that are pushing many Nigerians toward insecurity.
With a comprehensive strategy that includes transparent pricing, economic stabilization, and social support, Nigeria can protect the rights, safety, and dignity of its citizens.
A stable, fair, and inclusive economy is not only the foundation for prosperity but is essential for upholding the security and well-being of every Nigerian. We trust that the government will act swiftly to address these urgent concerns in the interest of all its citizens.
Respectfully,
Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu,
Country Director, IHRC-RFT Nigeria Chapter.
