The Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 19 suspected vandals for allegedly tampering with critical national assets and infrastructure across the state.
State Commandant Bala Bawa Bodinga, who briefed journalists on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters, said the suspects were apprehended during intelligence-driven patrols in Madobi, Tudunwada, Gwale, Minjibir, and Kumbotso LGAs.
According to him, the suspects were involved in the vandalism of electrical installations, communication cables, drainage slabs, and other public utilities. Recovered items included rolls of aluminum cables, 6.1kg of transformer armoured cables, two “sukudai” (suck-and-die) devices, a short spear (Dan Bida), a motorcycle, rubber solution, a broken soldering iron, five shovels, and five diggers.
Bodinga described the arrests as a strong warning to those sabotaging public infrastructure.
“Vandalism not only causes huge economic losses but also endangers lives and undermines development,” he said, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted after investigations.
