Telecom sector regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it has pruned down the unwieldy numbers of tariff options in the sector to only seven across all mobile network operators (MNOs).
It said before now, telcos had as many as 159 data tariff plans and 14 voice tariff options, a development that is certainly obscurantist and not transparent to the subscribers.
Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau at the NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, in his presentation at a capacity building forum for reporters at Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Oshodi, Lagos, said tariff simplification is one of the capstones of the administrative focus of the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, adding that this had led to the whittling down of the number of existing tariff regime in the industry.
Dr Adinde also said contrary to widespread impression that subscribers were always losing data because of the non-transparent nature of the billing system on the part of the telcos, ignorance on the part of the subscribers was responsible for their data loss.
In his presentation entitled: “Enhancing Consumer Satisfaction”, the Director also said the Commission will henceforth vet and publish existing tariffs in both voice and data on its website for all to see.
