The Kwara State Government has issued a weather advisory urging residents—particularly farmers—to take precautions in response to a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which predicts thunderstorms in the state from Tuesday to Thursday, mainly during the afternoon and evening.
The advisory, released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and signed by the Press Secretary, Ashaolu Omotola, warned that strong winds are likely to precede the rainfall.
The ministry advised farmers to avoid working in open fields during lightning storms and encouraged all residents to unplug electrical appliances when not in use.
“Farmers are urged to limit outdoor activities during thunderstorms, especially where lightning is present.
“Additionally, it is important to steer clear of tall trees and unstable structures during heavy rains,” the statement read.
The ministry also reminded farmers that the state has officially entered its planting season, which typically begins in early to mid-May.
With current rainfall patterns matching NiMet’s seasonal climate predictions, this period presents a favorable opportunity to begin planting.
To make the most of the season and mitigate risks posed by unpredictable weather, the government advised farmers to embrace climate-smart practices.
These include timely land preparation, the use of improved seed varieties, proper crop spacing, and efficient water management techniques.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers through timely advisories and on-ground extension services to help ensure a productive farming season.
