As Muslims across the state begin the holy month of Ramadan, the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has urged its enrollees to adopt health-conscious practices to safeguard their well-being while observing the fast.

In a statement issued on Wednesday at the commencement of Ramadan, the Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, advised beneficiaries of the state’s contributory healthcare scheme to prioritize their health by following essential medical guidelines throughout the fasting period.

She emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate hydration during non-fasting hours, encouraging enrollees to drink sufficient water to prevent dehydration while minimizing the intake of caffeinated and sugary beverages.

The agency also called for the adoption of a balanced diet during Suhoor and Iftar, recommending meals rich in fiber, protein, and essential nutrients, while limiting fried and high-fat foods.

Enrollees were further advised to practice moderation when breaking their fast to avoid indigestion and other related discomforts.

On physical activity, KSCHMA cautioned against strenuous exercise during fasting hours, suggesting light physical activities to support overall well-being.

Dr. Muktar also highlighted the need for proper medication management, urging enrollees on prescribed drugs to consult their healthcare providers to adjust dosage schedules appropriately during Ramadan.

Special consideration, she noted, should be given to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, the elderly, and individuals living with chronic medical conditions, who are encouraged to seek professional medical advice before undertaking the fast.

The Executive Secretary further stressed the importance of adequate rest and sleep to maintain energy levels and strengthen immune function during the fasting period.

Dr. Muktar extended her warm Ramadan greetings to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, all KSCHMA enrollees, and the entire Muslim Ummah, praying for sustained good health, spiritual fulfillment, and peace throughout the blessed month.

She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to the health and welfare of residents, urging enrollees to adhere strictly to the outlined guidelines while fulfilling their spiritual obligations.

“KSCHMA Cares: One Voice, One Health, One Future,” she stated.
