Katsina State Government has approved the establishment of a dedicated Hybrid Bus Operations and Maintenance Unit under the Katsina State Transport Authority (KTSTA) as part of efforts to modernise public transportation in the state.
The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting and disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr Bala Salisu Zango, while briefing journalists on the council’s resolutions.
Zango said the new unit would oversee the daily operations and management of the state’s hybrid buses, charging stations, maintenance facilities, and other related infrastructure.
He added that the government would recruit and train qualified drivers and administrative staff to ensure the transportation system operates efficiently and professionally.
According to the commissioner, the recruitment process would ensure fairness and inclusiveness, with plans to select at least one qualified driver from each of the state’s 34 Local Government Areas.
He said the initiative was designed to promote equal participation and provide residents across Katsina with opportunities to contribute to the success of the modern transport system.
In a related development, the council approved the installation of dedicated transformer substations at KTSTA’s operational facilities in Katsina, Daura and Funtua.
Zango explained that the substations would complement the existing solar inverter systems by providing a more reliable power supply for charging the hybrid buses and supporting workshop operations.
The commissioner said the measures were part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve public infrastructure, strengthen essential services and introduce sustainable transportation solutions across the state.
With the creation of a specialised operational unit and investment in charging infrastructure, the government said KTSTA is being positioned to play a greater role in the development of Katsina’s public transport system.
