Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing professional education and strengthening the veterinary sector, pledging targeted support for indigenous veterinary medical students and calling for greater recognition of the field’s critical role in public health and economic development.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouq Ibrahim, made this pledge while receiving executive members of the Kano State Veterinary Medical Students’ Association from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The delegation was led by Comrade Abubakar Muhammad Mande, who also serves as the Chief Representative of all indigenous Kano veterinary students across Nigeria.

During the advocacy visit, the students appealed for the introduction of a bonding policy between the government and veterinary students. They proposed a framework through which the state could offer financial assistance to cover tuition, practical sessions, and clinical fieldwork, addressing common challenges faced by students in the discipline.

Farouq Ibrahim underscored the critical importance of veterinary services, stressing that the profession deserves societal recognition equal to that of human medicine.

He decried the scarcity of indigenous private veterinary clinics in Kano despite the widespread presence of human medical facilities.

“This administration is committed to supporting individuals and institutions working to elevate the veterinary profession for the collective benefit of the state,” he said.

He assured the students that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate ministries and agencies for thorough consideration and action.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Kano State Chapter, Dr. Sunusi Abubakar Atiku Sanka, praised the government’s willingness to listen and endorsed the students’ appeal.

He noted that similar requests in the past had not been implemented and expressed optimism about renewed government interest.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Scholarship Board, Hon. Kabiru Getso Haruna, also joined the meeting and welcomed the students’ proposal.

He pledged the board’s support in working with other government agencies to address the issues raised.

In response, the student representatives expressed their gratitude to the Kano State Government for its ongoing investment in education and youth development.

They extended special thanks to SSG and Hon. Kabiru Getso Haruna for their warm reception and clear commitment to supporting educational advancement in specialized sectors like veterinary medicine.
