Kano Urges Friday Imams to Champion Patriotism, Support Sustainable Development

Isiyaku Ahmed

Kano State Government has called on Friday mosque Imams across the state to use their platforms to promote patriotism, unity, and love for Kano State as part of efforts to ensure sustainable development.

The call was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during the closing ceremony of a two-day sensitization workshop organized for Friday mosque Imams.

The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry for Religious Affairs and the Kano State Council of Friday Mosques’ Chief Imams.

Addressing the participants, Comrade Waiya emphasized that instilling a sense of pride and responsibility among citizens will encourage them to uphold the dignity of the state and avoid actions that could tarnish its image both locally and internationally.

He also delivered an extensive address on the leadership style of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, highlighting the governor’s citizen-centered policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

Waiya urged the Imams to support these policies by educating their followers and promoting positive conduct that aligns with the state’s developmental goals.

The Commissioner further cautioned religious leaders against statements or actions that could harm their reputation and that of Kano State.

He noted that the clerical sector remains one of the most respected institutions in the country and urged Imams to safeguard this honor by upholding high standards in their sermons and public engagements.

Highlighting the achievements of the present administration, Comrade Waiya cited ongoing developmental projects aimed at ensuring good governance, proper management, and the protection of public resources.

He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his commitment to supporting Islam, including constructing and renovating mosques across the state.

The Commissioner assured the Imams of the government’s resolve to improve their welfare so they can continue to carry out their duties with dignity.

He urged them to familiarize themselves with government programs and policies to better inform the public and offer constructive advice on initiatives that would benefit Islam and Kano State’s people.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Secretary of the Kano State Council of Friday Mosque Imams, Sheikh Ibrahim Habib Gazawa, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs for organizing the workshop.

He described it as a timely initiative that would enhance the Imams’ ability to communicate effectively with the public and align their messages with the state’s development agenda.

As part of the workshop, several papers were presented, including:

“The Policies of the Kano State Government for Improving Citizens’ Lives and Sustaining Development” by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.

“The Structure and Implementation of the Annual Budget” by Kano State Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono.

“Strategies for Effective Communication by Scholars to Promote Peace and Community Development” by Dr. Bala Muhammad of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano.

The event concluded with the distribution of certificates of participation to all the Imams who attended the sensitization workshop.
