A deeply disturbing case of domestic violence has come to light in Kano State, where a man allegedly assaulted his four-month-pregnant wife into unconsciousness after she asked him to repay a N40,000 loan.
The incident was made public during a recent broadcast of Baba Suda, a widely followed programme on Dala FM, and has since sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections for victims of domestic abuse.
According to the victim, the assault occurred after she requested repayment of the loan she had given her husband. In response, he reportedly struck her in the neck, rendering her unconscious. She suffered multiple injuries, including swollen and bloodshot eyes from lashings with a cable.
“A neighbor tried to intervene, but my husband drove him away, insisting it was a private issue,” she told the radio station.
Appearing before the Upper Sharia Court in Danbare, the husband denied the allegations. However, the woman told the court she would not consider reconciliation, citing a history of repeated abuse.
“If I return, I may not survive the next time,” she said. “This is not the first or second time. There is no love left.”
Her father confirmed previous incidents of abuse, noting that although he had once advised his daughter to return to her marital home, he was unaware of the full extent of the violence.
“We only discovered what happened when neighbors rushed her to the hospital,” he said. He also criticized officers at Bachirawa Police Station for their inadequate response to the case.
The court has adjourned the case until May 21, 2025, to allow additional witnesses to testify.
Meanwhile, the woman’s lawyer told the court that the husband had refused to cover any medical expenses, leaving her family to bear the cost of treatment. The court has since advised the legal team to file separate cases addressing both the alleged financial neglect and the ongoing abuse.
This case underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement of domestic violence laws and greater support for survivors seeking justice.
