The Chairman of the Kano State Online Media (KOMC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, has called on journalists to uphold professional ethics and responsible journalism in their coverage of the 2027 election campaigns and elections.

He made the call on Thursday while commissioning the renovated office of M Kano TV Online Media at Kofar Mazugal in the Kano metropolis.

The chairman, who was accompanied by members of the Chapel’s Executive Council, commended the Chief Executive Officer of M Kano TV, Musbahu Kano, for renovating and upgrading the organisation’s office to a standard befitting a modern media outlet.

He urged other online media practitioners to emulate the initiative, stressing that maintaining an identifiable physical office would enhance public confidence, credibility and accountability in online media organisations.

Comrade Dangambo also emphasised the importance of journalists’ safety, urging members not to compromise their lives while covering political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is better to report alive than to be reported dead. Your safety is very important, especially as the 2027 election campaign has commenced,” he said.

He advised journalists to resist attempts by politicians and other individuals to manipulate them into publishing fake news, misleading information or defamatory content.

The KOMC Chairman further disclosed that efforts were underway at the National Assembly to enact legislation requiring online media organisations to maintain identifiable physical addresses.

According to him, such legislation would help curb the activities of fake journalists, strengthen accountability within the online media space and address the spread of misinformation and fabricated stories.

Comrade Dangambo reiterated the Chapel’s commitment to continuous training and capacity building for its members, saying such initiatives would help strengthen professionalism and distinguish trained journalists from citizen journalists and social media influencers.

He also cautioned members against sensational reporting, particularly in their coverage of banditry and other security-related issues.

Comrade Dangambo urged journalists to give adequate and responsible attention to national security in their reportage, stressing that the media has an important role to play in promoting peace, public safety and national development.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of M Kano TV, Musbahu Kano, explained that he undertook the renovation of the office to provide a more conducive working environment for staff and a welcoming atmosphere for guests and visitors.

He thanked the Chapel’s Executive Council, particularly the Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, for honouring his invitation to the commissioning ceremony.

He also assured the Chapel and the public that M Kano TV would continue to operate in accordance with the ethics and principles of professional journalism.
