As part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services across Kano State, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) has appointed two high-powered supervisory teams to oversee regular monitoring, evaluation, and supportive supervision of secondary healthcare facilities under its jurisdiction.
The approval was granted by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, in line with the healthcare reform agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Board’s commitment to enhancing quality healthcare delivery throughout the state.
According to a statement issued by the Board, the initiative is designed to strengthen accountability, promote excellence in service delivery, ensure compliance with professional standards, and accelerate ongoing reforms within government-owned healthcare institutions.
The supervisory exercise will facilitate direct engagement with healthcare workers, identify operational challenges, assess the condition of infrastructure and medical equipment, and recommend practical measures aimed at improving patient care and overall service delivery.
The first team, Team A, will be chaired by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Nagoda, and comprises the Director of Administration and General Services, Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Director of Medical Laboratory Services, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, as well as representatives of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Association of Laboratory Scientists (ALS), and Public Health Nursing (PHN).
Team B will be led by the Director of Medical Services and includes the Director of Nursing Services, Deputy Director of Accounts, Director of Hospital Services, and representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), Primary Health Care Coordinators, Pharmaceutical Association, and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN).
The teams are expected to operate in accordance with a comprehensive Terms of Reference established by the Executive Secretary.
Their responsibilities include assessing the quality and efficiency of healthcare services, monitoring staff attendance and discipline, evaluating the availability and maintenance of medical equipment and infrastructure, ensuring adequate supply and utilization of essential drugs and laboratory consumables, and enforcing compliance with clinical, nursing, pharmaceutical, laboratory, and administrative standards.
Other key responsibilities include identifying operational challenges, promoting teamwork and professionalism among healthcare workers, ensuring cleanliness in general hospitals, monitoring implementation of previous recommendations, and submitting detailed reports with actionable recommendations after each supervisory visit.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Nagoda said the establishment of the supervisory teams demonstrates the Board’s resolve to institutionalize continuous quality improvement and responsive healthcare management across the state’s hospitals.
He emphasized that effective supervision remains a critical pillar for achieving excellence in healthcare delivery and assured residents that the Board would continue to deploy every available mechanism to ensure that government investments in the health sector translate into tangible improvements in healthcare services.
Dr. Nagoda further reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of building a resilient, accessible, and efficient healthcare system capable of meeting the healthcare needs and aspirations of the people of Kano State.
