The Kano State Ministry of Health has taken a decisive step toward improving health communication and public awareness, convening a high-level strategy meeting at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Nassarawa Hospital.
Chaired by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the session brought together Public Relations Officers (PROs), Senior Special Reporters (SSRs), Special Reporters (SRs), and heads of health-related Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The objective was to review current publicity methods, close communication gaps, and adopt more impactful approaches to reaching the public.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Yusuf stressed that effective communication is the lifeline of public health progress.
He called for greater synergy among all stakeholders, noting that unified, clear, and culturally sensitive messaging is essential to advancing the state’s health agenda.
Key decisions and action points from the meeting included establishing a central coordination desk for health publicity, developing a comprehensive publicity framework to guide all health campaigns, and strengthening collaboration between PROs, SSRs, SRs, and MDAs for consistent messaging.
Others are expanding the use of digital platforms and traditional media to reach diverse audiences, enhancing community engagement through locally relevant and culturally respectful messages, introducing regular capacity-building sessions and performance reviews for communication officers.
The meeting ended with a firm pledge from all participants to reinforce public health publicity efforts across Kano State, ensuring that residents are well-informed, proactive, and engaged in health initiatives.
Closing the session, Dr. Yusuf reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment: “Our goal is to ensure no community is left behind in accessing vital health information. Effective communication is the bridge between policy and the people, and together, we will strengthen that bridge for the benefit of all Kano residents.”
