Kano Assembly Rejects Tax Reform Bills

News Desk

The Kano State House of Assembly has rejected the tax reform bills currently under consideration in the National Assembly.

The decision was made following a plenary session on Monday, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Ismail Jibrin Falgore.

Lawan Husseini, the Majority Leader and member representing Dala Constituency, presented the motion, urging northern lawmakers and the conference of speakers to prevent the bill from passing.

He argued that the bill would not benefit the northern region, describing it as a “calculated plan to sabotage the economy” and increase hardship in the area.

Husseini highlighted concerns over the proposed allocation of VAT, noting that states like Lagos would receive the largest share due to the concentration of major companies and institutions there. He warned that this could further weaken northern states, some of which may struggle to pay salaries and face increased poverty and hardship.

Supporting the motion, Salisu Mohammed, representing Doguwa Constituency, suggested that the Senate should prioritize other issues affecting Nigerians, such as insecurity and unemployment, rather than rushing the tax reform bill. Murtala Kadage of Garko Constituency also called for unity among northern representatives to ensure the bill does not pass.

After extensive deliberation, the House urged northern members of the Senate, House of Representatives, and the conference of speakers to act swiftly to block the passage of the bill.
