A high-powered delegation has conducted a joint supportive supervision visit to health facilities in Kano State as part of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).

The team assessed service delivery, infrastructure, and staff performance at Garko Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) and Buda Basic Healthcare Centre (BHC).

The exercise was led by Honourable Members of the Kano State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Hon. Abba Ibrahim (Garko Constituency) and Hon. Usman Rabula (Kiru Constituency), in partnership with Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development (LISDEL), EngenderHealth, Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), represented by Chief Nursing Officer Ismail Nasiru, the Kano State League of Associations of Midwives (KanSLAM), and officials from the Primary Healthcare and Hospitals Management Board.

To ensure strengthening healthcare the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH) also supported the media in enhancing reportage on healthcare delivery in Kano, particularly to strengthen accountability and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

The visit, part of a broader legislative oversight mechanism, aims to ensure that facilities are functional, adequately staffed, and equipped to deliver high-quality maternal and newborn care.

During the exercise, the delegation engaged with facility managers and frontline workers, inspected infrastructure and equipment, and reviewed service delivery protocols.

Gaps identified included inadequate manpower, shortages of essential drugs, and the need for improved infrastructure.

Hon. Abba Ibrahim emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to accountability and results-oriented oversight, assuring that the findings will inform policy interventions and resource allocation to enhance maternal and child health.

Hon. Usman Rabula reaffirmed the legislature’s support for initiatives aimed at preventing avoidable maternal and neonatal deaths, noting that “no woman should lose her life while giving life.”

The joint initiative underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in line with global health priorities and Nigeria’s drive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By reinforcing supervision and accountability, the state aims not only to save lives but also to restore public confidence in healthcare delivery, particularly at the grassroots level.
