Kano State Government has praised the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano Chapter, for hosting a one-day seminar focused on breast cancer awareness and broader women’s health concerns.

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast multiply uncontrollably, forming a tumor. These cancerous cells can invade surrounding tissues and, in more advanced stages, spread to other parts of the body.

The event, supported by the Aminu Garba Magashi Foundation (AMG), received commendation from the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who was represented by the Director of Planning, Ibrahim Isa.

He described the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a people-oriented government that places high value on health, especially the well-being of women and children.

The Commissioner encouraged NAWOJ to continue conducting such enlightenment programs for the benefit of the public.

In her remarks, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children, and Persons with Disabilities, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Hod, represented by Hajiya Nafi Muhammad Yakasai, urged NAWOJ to collaborate with her ministry to extend the program to grassroots communities.

She noted that widespread awareness would help reduce breast cancer risks, adding that early detection remains vital.

She thanked NAWOJ for organizing the seminar and wished the association success in its future activities.

During her presentation, Hajiya Hauwa Haruna of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital stated that early detection through proper diagnosis and annual screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent breast cancer.

Haruna identified common warning signs such as changes in breast colour, lumps, and persistent pain.

She further advised women to adopt healthy practices such as removing brassieres while at home, eating a balanced diet, and discontinuing the use of bleaching creams as part of preventive measures.

Representing the Aminu Magashi Foundation (AMG), Hannatu Abbas encouraged NAWOJ members to disseminate the information gained during the seminar through their respective media platforms for the benefit of the masses.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kano State Chapter, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, welcomed all participants and expressed hope that everyone would benefit from the knowledge shared.

She thanked the Commissioner of Information and the Commissioner of Women Affairs for their continued support.

She also called on other NGOs to emulate the Aminu Magashi Foundation, whose support to NAWOJ, particularly in health-related programs has been remarkable.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano Council, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, represented by Comrade Nura Bala Ajingi, shared that he learned valuable insights from the seminar and would share the information with his family.

The seminar drew the participation of several senior women journalists, including NAWOJ National Secretary Wasila Ibrahim Ladan, Hajiya Gambo Mustafa, and Hajiya Salma Yusuf.
