In a move to reduce the financial and logistical burdens on admission seekers, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have introduced a unified, one-off N4,000 fee for the verification of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) O’Level results.
The new policy eliminates the long-standing practice where candidates were forced to pay multiple verification fees to different tertiary institutions during the admission screening process.
This was disclosed in a joint statement issued on Tuesday and signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.
According to the statement, the partnership is designed to put candidates’ interests first by reducing unnecessary costs, reducing administrative stress, and simplifying tertiary admissions while safeguarding the integrity and security of academic records.
Unified Verification System
Under the new arrangement, candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will verify their WAEC results just once through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform.
Once the N4,000 payment is made and the result is verified, JAMB will automatically make the outcome available to the relevant universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education.
The statement explicitly warned candidates not to make verification payments to individual institutions.
“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the bodies stated.
Ban on Duplicate Fees
Consequently, JAMB and WAEC have directed all tertiary institutions to utilize the verified results supplied by JAMB for their admission screening, processing, and other administrative purposes.
The examination bodies strictly barred higher institutions from demanding additional payments from candidates for verifying the same WAEC results.
The policy follows extensive consultations and strategic meetings between leadership teams at JAMB and WAEC, aimed at streamlining the transition from secondary to tertiary education.
To facilitate this, WAEC has officially authorised JAMB to share the outcomes of all verified results with destination institutions.
Digital Convenience
Beyond cost savings, the initiative introduces digital flexibility.
Candidates can now initiate and complete their WASSCE O’Level verification from the comfort of their homes or any internet-enabled location.
This eliminates the stressful requirement of making repeated physical visits to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.
The two apex bodies urged all upcoming admission seekers to take immediate advantage of the unified platform to secure their verified credentials for their institutions of choice.
