The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed a thorough institutional review of the 128-page Amnesty International report titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria.”
The report alleges patterns of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations involving the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in the region.
In line with his commitment to transparency, accountability, and professional policing, the IGP has instructed relevant departments and field formations to conduct a meticulous line-by-line assessment of the report.
This review will involve cross-checking allegations with operational records, intelligence reports, and field data from police commands and tactical units operating in the South-East.
While the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) remains committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, the IGP emphasized that past reports from Amnesty International have, at times, contained factual inaccuracies and broad generalizations.
He noted that the ongoing review will be guided strictly by verifiable facts, operational evidence, and institutional integrity.
Upon completion, the Force will release a detailed, evidence-based response addressing the specific allegations raised.
According to the IGP, this process reflects the NPF’s principled approach to constructive criticism and its duty to sustain public trust through transparency and contextual clarity.
The IGP further reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to lawful, accountable, and rights-based policing.
He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening internal accountability, improving human rights training, and aligning police operations with global best practices.
The Police Force also expressed readiness for genuine engagement with civil society groups, human rights bodies, international partners, and the National Human Rights Commission, urging all stakeholders to approach such sensitive matters with fairness, accuracy, and an appreciation of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
