I usually avoid writing about political personalities for personal reasons.

However, since yesterday, after reading about the N6 million donation to the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Kano Chapter, I felt compelled to say a few words.

First, I commend The Director General of the National Productivity Centre of Nigeria, Dr. Baffa Babba Danagundi, who, according to reports, has donated a total of N8 million to support football development in Kano State.

The donation comprises N6 million for the registration of CAF A Licence for coaches and N2 million for Kano football veterans and families of deceased members.

Sincerely, I do not know Hon. Danagundi personally. I only hear about his generosity from those close to him, especially his Personal Assistant, Aminu Abba Kwaru, who happens to be a very good friend of mine.

Baffa deserves all the praise for his long-standing support for grassroots sports development in Kano.

Apart from Senator Barau Jibrin and Member representing Bichi Federal Constituency Hon. Abubakar Kabir, I believe no other politician comes close to his consistent efforts and donations to grassroots clubs in the state.

This gesture deserves continued commendation. The financial assistance to both the veterans and the coaches’ association will endear him to the teeming, sports-loving youths of Kano.

More importantly, it will boost the morale and capacity of our coaches, who are the foundation of player development.

Other political appointees and aspirants should emulate this kind gesture in their various local governments and communities. Supporting grassroots sports is one of the surest ways to connect with and be loved by the youth.

Beyond popularity, such investment helps to curb social vices. An engaged youth playing football is a youth less likely to be on the streets. Sports gives hope, discipline, and a sense of belonging.

I thank Dr. Baffa Babba Danagundi for this timely intervention and I urge him to do more.

I also appeal to him to use his good office and voice to advocate to the Kano State Government for the rehabilitation of Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata and the historic, dilapidated Kano Pillars FC Stadium, Sabon Gari

Upgrading these facilities will greatly boost sporting activities, create jobs, and give our players and coaches the standard platforms they deserve.

Kano’s sporting future depends on leaders who invest where it matters most, at the grassroots.
