Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been named Financial Architect Governor of the Year 2026 by the Daily Independent Newspaper, after emerging top among several nominees in a highly competitive selection process.
A statement confirming the award was signed on Sunday and issued to newsmen by the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.
According to the statement, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Steve Omanufeme, announced the award, stating that Governor Yusuf’s emergence followed a rigorous three-stage evaluation process.
The process included public voting, assessment by a panel of judges, and final approval by the newspaper’s board of editors.
According to Omanufeme, the award was formally conferred during the grand finale of the publication’s golden jubilee celebration held in Lagos, where the governor was recognized for his outstanding financial management and governance record.
The award ceremony took place at Eko Hotel and Suites, with the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, receiving the honour on behalf of the governor.
The newspaper noted that Governor Yusuf’s selection was largely driven by his impressive track record in boosting Kano State’s internally generated revenue.
The state’s revenue reportedly increased significantly from between N37 billion and N40 billion in 2023 to over N100 billion by the end of the 2025 fiscal year.
It added that the achievement reflects a combination of fiscal discipline, prudent financial management, and sustained efforts to improve revenue generation mechanisms, positioning Kano among the leading states in this regard.
Observers say the governor’s policies have also strengthened public confidence, with visible investments in infrastructure and a commitment to accountability in the management of public funds.
