Nigeria’s former Chief Justice, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, passed away in the wee hours of Friday at 89.
Uwais, who was born on 12 June 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006 and was renowned for his commitment to judicial reforms and the independence of the judiciary.
In a statement, the family confirmed the death of the jurist.
The statement read;
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. It is with a heavy heart, full of gratitude to Allah Subahanahu Wata’ala, that we announce the passing away of our father, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation.
“Funeral arrangements are to be done immediately after Juma’at Mosque today at the National Mosque Abuja.”
