Five Deported to Eswatini Amid U.S. Crackdown on Criminal Migrants

The United States has deported five foreign nationals to Eswatini under its expanded third-country deportation policy, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday.

According to DHS, the men — originally from Vietnam, Jamaica, Cuba, Yemen, and Laos — were convicted of various crimes in the U.S. but could not be returned to their home countries, which reportedly refused to accept them.

The deportees were flown to Eswatini, a small southern African country, despite having no known ties there.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at DHS, said the men were “uniquely barbaric” and cited their criminal backgrounds as justification for their removal.

This move follows similar deportations to South Sudan, made possible after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted limitations on sending individuals to countries with which they have no legal or familial connections.

So far, Eswatini’s government has not confirmed any agreement with the U.S. to receive third-country deportees, nor has it commented on the fate of the five men now within its borders.

The Trump administration has indicated it plans to negotiate more such arrangements with African nations, though resistance remains.

Nigeria, for instance, has publicly declined to receive deportees who are not its nationals.

In recent months, the U.S. has also sent migrants — including Venezuelans — to countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Panama under similar deals.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has a population of around 1.2 million and is ruled by Africa’s last absolute monarch, King Mswati III.

Political parties are largely banned, and human rights groups have accused the monarchy of cracking down on dissent through repression and violence.
