On Thursday, fire broke out at the North-West University’s Campus in Kano, engulfing the 9th floor of the building.
The inferno affected the offices of the Head of Department (HOD) and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.
The Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service were on ground to quench the fire.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, who attributed the inferno to an electric spark, said that firefighters managed to contain the flames before they could spread to other parts of the building.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, said the extent of the damage remained unclear.
“We cannot ascertain the total loss at this moment, but we are grateful that no lives were lost,” he said.
He said the university enforces a policy requiring all electrical appliances to be turned off before staff and students leave, aiming to enhance safety, conserve energy, and reduce costs.
“Routine inspections are conducted to ensure compliance across all departments,” he added.
