Fiscal Discipline and Development Advocacy Centre (FIDAC) in collaboration with Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) and the Aminu Magashi Foundation has sensitized stakeholders on green budgeting and financing in Kano State.

The workshop aimed to encourage investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other sustainable practices that would help the government reduce greenhouse gas, and low carbon emissions for a healthy environment and climate resilient state.

The lead convener of the workshop, Abdusalam Mohamed Kani of FIDAC, said the major objective of the workshop is to ensure citizens’ engagement, sensitization, and enlightenment in understanding the consequences of climate change in our society.

“So we are doing whatever is possible as citizens to ensure advocacy and sensitization on climate change that will make Kano green in the next two years.

“Also, we need to understand climate change is a reality, and unless and until we work collectively towards financing climate change, the consequences are enormous in terms of desertification, flooding, and drought in our community.

“Our optimism in 2025 is that Kano is starting a green budgeting and we are hoping to ensure that all the capital projects in the state are reflecting climate resilience strategies in our localities.

He called on participants to organize step-down training for the workshop in their communities.

Director of Climate Change, Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Umar Saleh Anka, explained that the workshop emphasizes how the state will be greening its budget by identifying items that are contributing to sustainability growth.

“Currently the state government has allocated over N30 billion in making sure that climate change activities are captured in the budget.

“That will help towards implementing programs and policies that will aid in mitigating climate change in our environment.

“Furthermore, we are getting institutional support to make sure that Kano state has achieved climate change policies,”

Anka stressed that citizens should comply with keeping a clean environment.

The workshop entitled Paper Presentations from state and non-state actors.

On 29 January 2025, the Kano State Executive Council approved a comprehensive climate change policy framework to address environmental degradation.

The event had civil society organizations, climate change advocates, students, People with Disabilities, women groups, trade associations, academia, and the media in attendance.
