Editor

The Federal government will, next month, come out with a master plan for development of the railway sector in Nigeria, as part of efforts to enhance movement of bulky goods and passengers at a cost effective rate.

Managing director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa dropped this hint on Monday while playing host to the management team of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) led by its managing director, Abimbola Akinajo at the Corporation’s headquarters in Lagos.

Although details of the proposed master plan were not made clear, he was quite optimistic that, in the next five years, Nigerians will be able to even enjoy the new generation rail system .

In this country. In our generation, we shall be able to operate all modes of modern rail systems comparable to anywhere in the world, Opeifa said.

He stated further that, as facilitator of trade and business, the Corporation will continue to give priority to areas that would lessen the burden of transportation on the people, reduce poverty, and bring down the rising inflation.

The NRC boss expressed optimism that a time will come when all states of the federation will be able to run train services round the clock in their states and by extension lessen the burden on  NRC  so as to concentrate on freight movements.
