The Federal Government has inaugurated a Technical Working Committee to develop Nigeria’s National Carbon Budget, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to tackle climate change.
Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbass Lawal, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja on Thursday, described the initiative as critical to Nigeria’s environmental, economic, and social future.
In his keynote address, the minister emphasized that Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment in confronting the climate crisis and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a credible carbon budget in line with the country’s obligations under the Paris Agreement.
He stressed that the creation of a carbon budget is not merely a technical task but a national priority that requires collective input from all sectors of society.
According to him, the process offers a unique opportunity to align Nigeria’s climate policies with sustainable economic development, social advancement, and environmental protection.
The committee comprises representatives from key sectors including energy, transport, agriculture, water resources, finance, civil society organizations, academia, youth, and women-led climate groups, among others.
