The Federal Government and Gombe State have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert the newly built General Hospital in Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).

The MoU was signed on Monday at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya representing Gombe State and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, signing on behalf of the Federal Government.

Governor Yahaya, who built and equipped the hospital under his administration, described the takeover as a milestone in expanding access to quality healthcare, not only for Gombe but for the entire North East region. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the conversion under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The governor highlighted his administration’s reforms in the health sector, including the establishment of two functional primary health centres in each of the state’s 114 wards and the reconstruction of three modern general hospitals across senatorial districts.

Dr. Salako commended Yahaya’s investments in healthcare and assured that the Kumo facility would become the 16th federal hospital under the current administration. He said the Federal Government would mobilise resources, personnel, and equipment to make the centre operational immediately.

The minister also pledged federal support for the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre in Kaltungo, in response to a request from the governor.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Daju Kachallom, praised the partnership, noting its importance in improving access to healthcare nationwide.
