Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has warned that Nigeria could face authoritarian rule if President Bola Tinubu remains in power beyond 2027.
El-Rufai issued the warning while receiving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who paid him a solidarity visit following an attack by suspected thugs during the recent inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna.
According to him, the current administration is centralising power and showing signs of entrenching itself, a situation he compared to Cameroon’s long-serving leader, Paul Biya.
He urged opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that without collective action, Tinubu might attempt to stay in office indefinitely.
He further described the government as “worse than any military regime”, adding that Nigerians have become increasingly dissatisfied with the ruling APC.
