A tragic road accident in Egypt’s Menofia Governorate claimed the lives of 19 people on Friday after a truck collided with a minibus carrying workers in the city of Ashmoun, local authorities confirmed.

According to a statement by the labor ministry, the workers were en route to their jobs when the minibus was struck and completely destroyed. Only three individuals survived the crash and were transported, along with the deceased, to Ashmoun General Hospital.

Labor Minister Mohamed Gebran directed officials to disburse compensation to the victims’ families—200,000 Egyptian pounds (about $4,010) for each deceased and 20,000 pounds ($400) for the injured.

Menofia Governor Ibrahim Abu Leimon has launched an urgent investigation into the cause of the crash and urged the transportation ministry to reassess safety protocols along the regional road where the collision occurred.

Egypt has a long-standing issue with road safety, with thousands of fatalities reported annually due to speeding, poorly maintained roads, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations.
