The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described tax evasion, false declarations, and other financial malpractices as serious economic offences that deny Nigeria the resources needed for national development.

Speaking at a one-day sensitization workshop in Kano, the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, Sa’ad Hanafi, said such illegal activities are not only unlawful but also a disservice to the country. The event was jointly organized by the EFCC, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA) to promote trade compliance and adherence to legal regulations.

Hanafi explained that the EFCC, in collaboration with other agencies, is using intelligence and technology to curb illegal trade practices. He noted that the workshop reflects a collective commitment to building a transparent and accountable business environment.

“Tax evasion and false declarations rob the nation of resources needed for infrastructure and social services,” Hanafi said. “Compliance is not a burden but a strategic advantage that strengthens corporate integrity, enhances reputation, and ensures long-term sustainability.”

He emphasized that while law enforcement agencies like the EFCC and NCS are often associated with prosecution, their ultimate goal is prevention — to safeguard the financial system, protect the economy from illicit flows, and ensure all entities meet their tax obligations.

On her part, Zonal Coordinator of the Nigeria Customs Service, Zone B, Nsikan Umoh, said the service under Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi has deployed advanced technologies — including Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Trade Facilitation tools such as the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) and the Overtime Cargo Clearance System — to improve transparency and efficiency in customs operations.

She described the workshop’s theme as timely and in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at achieving sustainable economic prosperity.

Earlier, President of KACCIMA, Usman Darma, pledged the chamber’s continued collaboration with enforcement agencies to sensitize members and ensure full compliance with trade and tax regulations.
