The Community Initiative for Climate Engagement and Development (CICEND) has called for urgent action to strengthen climate resilience as Nigeria celebrated its 65th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Executive Director of CICEND, Isiyaku Ahmed, praised Nigerians’ resilience despite economic hardship and insecurity but warned that worsening climate impacts, including floods, droughts, coastal erosion, and heat stress, are compounding existing challenges and threatening food security, livelihoods, and public services.

According to the statement, communities are already adopting coping measures such as climate-smart farming, reforestation, mangrove restoration, early-warning systems, and solar energy solutions, but stressed that these efforts require more government and financial support.

CICEND also highlighted the link between climate change and insecurity, urging authorities to integrate adaptation into national and state budgets, expand early-warning systems, invest in nature-based solutions, and create green jobs for youth.

Calling for inclusive partnerships with the private sector, development agencies, and civil society, CICEND said protecting the environment and building sustainable livelihoods are essential to Nigeria’s future stability and prosperity.

CICEND remains hopeful, reminding Nigerians that just as independence was achieved through unity and courage, the fight against climate change demands collective action and solidarity.

Happy 65th Independence Anniversary, and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the statement concluded.
