A fire outbreak has destroyed or affected 110 structures at the Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service said the incident occurred at about 7:39 a.m. on Saturday, following a report received from a timber dealer, identified as Alhaji Abba.

The spokesperson of the service, PFS Kabiru Isah Jafaru, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.

He said firefighters from various stations within the Kano metropolis were immediately mobilised to the scene upon receiving the report.

According to him, the fire had engulfed several sections of the market before the arrival of the rescue teams.

Jafaru said the inferno affected 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures.

He, however, noted that firefighters successfully brought the situation under control and prevented the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.

The Executive Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged traders and other business owners to remain vigilant and adopt necessary fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents.

He particularly warned that the harmattan season increases the risk of fire outbreaks, urging members of the public to exercise caution in handling fire and other potentially hazardous materials.
