Nigerians can now search for their home addresses and obtain digital postcodes through the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introduced by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to improve address identification across the country.

Launched nationwide on 1 October 2026, the system assigns an 11-character alphanumeric code to each addressable building, providing a standardized way to identify, locate and share precise addresses.

The initiative is expected to improve mail and parcel delivery, logistics, emergency response and public service delivery, particularly in communities where street names, house numbers and formal addressing systems are inadequate.

The platform allows users to search for locations using street addresses, place names, postcodes and aliases. Some records also include homeowners’ names where properties are commonly identified by the names of their owners.

Residents can find their digital postcodes, verify the addresses associated with their buildings, and request corrections where necessary by following these steps.

1. Visit the Official NIPOST Postcode Website

Visit postcode.gov.ng and select the “Find my postcode” option to access the search platform.

Users can also download the NIPOST Postcode application through the official website. The Android version is available on Google Play, while the website indicates that the iOS version is coming soon.

Residents are advised to use the official website or application to avoid relying on inaccurate or unofficial postcode information.

2. Search for Your Home Address

Enter your house number, street name, neighbourhood, or another relevant location detail in the search field.

Users can also search by place name, postcode, or alias, where such information is available in the database.

After entering the details, select the search result that matches the intended address. Examine the accompanying map to confirm that the location corresponds to your building.

Check nearby roads, neighbouring properties, and recognizable landmarks before accepting the result. This is particularly important in densely populated neighbourhoods where several buildings may be close together or where formal street addresses are unavailable.

Once the correct building has been identified, the platform should display its corresponding digital postcode.

3. Check Whether Your Name Appears in the Address Records

Some properties may be listed using their owners’ names because residents commonly use such names to identify buildings, especially in communities without clear street names or house numbers.

NIPOST Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi, explained that officials collected both formal and informal building addresses during the system’s field data-gathering exercise.

“During ground data collection, we collected standard or informal addresses of buildings,” she said, according to a report by TheCable.

To check whether your name appears, search for it if it is commonly used to identify your property or inspect the address description attached to your building.

However, the absence of your name does not necessarily mean that your building is missing from the database. The postcode identifies the building or addressable location, rather than the owner or occupants.

4. Use Your Phone’s Location Feature to Find Your Building

Residents who are at or near their homes can use their phones’ location services to identify their buildings on the platform’s map.

First, enable your phone’s location service and grant the application permission to access your location, if prompted.

Select the relevant location or “Find My Postcode” feature to display your position and nearby mapped buildings. Locate your building on the map and select it to retrieve the associated postcode.

Users should take care to select the correct property, as neighbouring buildings may have different digital postcodes.

If the displayed location is inaccurate, try searching by the street address or another recognised landmark before proceeding.

5. Correct Address Errors or Request a Missing Postcode

Residents who discover incorrect building information can use the platform’s available correction or feedback option to propose an amendment.

Where a building does not have a postcode, users can request one through the website or application by providing the relevant address details and location information. A Google Maps link may also help NIPOST identify the property.

Requests for missing postcodes and proposed corrections are subject to review before the official records are updated.

Providing accurate information, including the building’s location and nearby landmarks, can help facilitate the identification and verification process.

6. Understand What Your Digital Postcode Means

A digital postcode identifies a building or addressable location, not an individual resident.

Consequently, people living in the same building can use the same digital postcode alongside the property’s regular written address. Anyone who moves to another building will need to use the postcode assigned to the new location.

The system is intended to establish a more consistent addressing framework across Nigeria and support the work of postal operators, delivery companies, emergency responders and public institutions.

A standardised digital address can also make it easier for residents to communicate their locations when requesting services or receiving deliveries, provided the address and map information are accurate.

According to information on the official platform, finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free.

Residents are encouraged to verify their buildings’ locations carefully before using or sharing their postcodes, particularly for deliveries and other services that depend on precise address information.
