The Ogun State Government says it has committed N157.9 billion to pension-related payments since May 29, 2019, as part of efforts to settle outstanding retirement obligations and improve the welfare of retirees.
The government disclosed this following the release of an additional N5.83 billion for the payment of gratuities and Additional Pension Benefits to retirees.
The latest release, approved at the September 24, 2026 meeting of the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC), is targeted at clearing outstanding retirement liabilities owed to pensioners who served the state.
The Head of Service, Olanrewaju Saka, said N4,906,950,967.98 of the funds would be used to pay gratuities to Local Government pensioners who retired in 2022 and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) retirees who retired in 2021.
He said the remaining N918,596,179.16 would be used to provide Additional Pension Benefits to eligible retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
According to Saka, the latest intervention reflects Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to progressively addressing outstanding retirement obligations and ensuring that retirees who served the state are treated with dignity.
He added that the administration had released N4.12 billion in Additional Pension Benefits to CPS retirees since the beginning of 2026.
Giving a breakdown of the N157.9 billion cumulative commitment, the Head of Service said N29.12 billion had been paid as gratuity to 7,390 beneficiaries, while N105.39 billion had been spent on pension payments to 16,420 beneficiaries.
He said the state also committed N7.78 billion to CPS deductions for 29,883 beneficiaries between July 2025 and August 2026.
Other components of the expenditure included N3.33 billion for Accrued Pension Rights (APR) to 2,567 beneficiaries, N5.04 billion for arrears of CPS deductions and N1.35 billion in Returns on Investment (ROI).
Saka further disclosed that N584.85 million was spent on death benefits and other payments for 160 beneficiaries, while N1.32 billion was provided as palliatives.
He added that Additional Pension Benefits paid to 709 beneficiaries during the period amounted to approximately N4 billion.
The Head of Service clarified that the N45.5 billion figure represented the broader amount committed to gratuity payments for Local Government and SUBEB retirees since 2019, while the N157.9 billion covered all pension-related categories during the period.
Saka assured retirees that the government would continue to honour its obligations and deploy available resources to address outstanding retirement benefits.
He said the sustained investment in pensions, gratuities and other retirement benefits demonstrated the government’s continued focus on the welfare of senior citizens who contributed their productive years to the development of Ogun State.
